Recorded Music
Recorded music is regularly used in film production. Short films are no different from features here, many short films have had original scores which have been composed for them and many others given their small budgets have managed to get permission from upcoming or artists to use their music. Productions on very small budgets on very small budgets rely on sourcing low fee music.
I undertook research into the kind of skill sets that are required for producing original scores and compositions. By going to universities offering courses in composition and looking at the skills they require and at their development of those skills.
- Many of the courses they offer are creative courses.
their aim is to join up creative practice with academic research and scholarship
- Degrees are quite distinctive, music degree is very broad. Modules that are covered include performance and composition in its various forms: productions, song writing and musicology.
- Building a decent show-reel to composing music for all the major regions of the business from ads, TV and film dramas and documentaries, to library and production music for online use.
Kingston:
- Curriculum is enhanced by reflecting the diversity and the creativity of western established music, famous and world music's
- The wide choice of elective modules permits you to tailor the course to your own advantage.
National Film and Television School - NFTS
- With a firm emphasis on storytelling, students develop an aesthetic awareness integrated with technical expertise, encouraging them to be collaborators from an early stage in all
Conclusion:
The one element that is essential for music production which is to expose students individuality, uniqueness, creativity. It is a broad course which supplies with facilities that would help the students in future in the cinematic field.

Locations
Locations:
Finding and securing locations is an essential part of pre-production a good location will make a film just as a poor location can break a film. What follows are some steps that need to be taken for achieving good locations.
Identify
- Script - story
- location(s) manager
- location scouts
These 3 could potentially be done by one candidate, as in a skeletal crew.
This could link to the way in which the director would play the role.
Personal library info (loc)
- libraries (third party)
Research:
Local location offices
http://www.freeofficesearch.co.uk/Banstead_office_space/Banstead_offices_Surrey
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-to-let/Banstead.html
You can see from the links above that there are many locations that are available to the public to rent for their needs. This allows the public or short film producers space which is required and could potentially shoot a scene in an office.
Locations (eSource)
- leg work
- go out and scout
- Private owner
- photographs
- recce check list

Personnel
Recruiting a skeleton crew:
What is a skeleton crew?
- A skeleton crew is the minimum number of personnel needed to operate. This is usually in order for saving money in the post production stages, or potentially to be less conspicuous when shooting without any permits.
Which two people does his skeleton crew not include and why?
- Noam Kroll leaves out the producer and director. This is due to the fact that they are so important that they are not needed to be labelled, this is because they are essential to have in any production of films whether it being a fully orientated film or a short film.
In the Indie article Noam Kroll, a Los Angeles-based filmmaker suggested that five people were needed at most for a skeleton film crew.
Director of Photography:
Reasons for choosing:
- As a director you would have more time to direct your actors
- Less time would be spent on worrying about lighting and set-ups
Makeup/ Hair:
Reasons for choosing:
- Qualified to use make-up perfect for your scene/ mood
- Makeup artists adds a professionalism effect to the set
Production Assistant:
Reason for choosing:
- A dedicated PA keeps things moving well on set
- Handy on set, for example; can move gear etc
Location Audio:
Reason for choosing:
- Good sound is critical in the overall success in your film
- Fits into your production; complexity, knowledge and skill set to make it work
Gaffer/ Grip:
Reason for choosing:
